How do I fix a 404 error on my site?

Here is a common problem: a customer reports a 404 error message. That means they clicked a link on your website and the page would not display. Instead, they got an error page with a 404 error warning.

You double-checked all of the links on your page and they seem fine. What do you do?

Step 1

• Open and examine every link in your footer and header navigation. Look for out-of-date links. Be sure to check the buttons, too.

Step 2

• Examine the text (especially headings) and images for old links.

Locating 404 error messages

Not sure which web page has a 404 error? You can find that information by opening the Issues page.

1. Log in to your account and click WEBSITE on the top menu.
2. On the left menu, click the OPTIMISE tab. A drop-down menu displays.
3. Click Issues. The Issues page displays.

4. Scroll down to the Page Error heading. You can find a list of pages with 404 errors under the heading Affected Pages.
