The image below shows the number of sessions is greater than the number of visitors over the same period of time.
Why are the numbers different?
- The Visitors box counts the number of unique visitors.
- The Sessions box includes unique visitors plus repeat visitors.
Example
A person visits your website for the first time, looks at a few pages, and then leaves.
- The total in the Visitors box increases by 1.
- The total in the Sessions box increases by 1.
Later that day, the same person comes back to your website and looks a few pages.
- The total in the Visitors box increases by 0 (not a unique visitor).
- The total in the Sessions box increases by 1.
The number of sessions is normally higher than the number of visitors. Assuming you have good website content, people will come back to your site again and again. That means more sessions.
